Paper 2-style practice: Higher (chapters 12–18)

One hundred original Higher marks in the style of Paper 2: tangent gradients, Le Chatelier predictions, atom economy, condensation polymers, ion tests, flame emission spectroscopy and full evaluations — every Higher skill from chapters 12–18.

In the style of The Higher Paper 2 formats (AQA Paper 2, Edexcel Paper 2, OCR Gateway Higher papers). These are original QuizQuip questions written against the DfE GCSE subject content — not AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR past-paper questions, and QuizQuip is not affiliated with any of the boards.

How to use

Work through it like the real exam

  1. 1Print the paper, or open the PDF and write your answers on paper.
  2. 2Set a timer and work without notes — the real thing is timed and closed-book.
  3. 3Mark your work with the mark scheme, one marking point at a time, including M marks for method.
  4. 4Redo every question you lost marks on, then revise that chapter.

Section A: Multiple-choice questions[10 marks]

Choose one answer for each question. Each question is worth 1 mark.

  1. 1

    A tangent drawn at 30 s on a gas-volume graph rises 32 cm³ over 16 s. The rate at 30 s is

    1. A2.0 cm³/s
    2. B0.5 cm³/s
    3. C16 cm³/s
    4. D512 cm³/s
    ( )
  2. 2

Increasing the temperature of a reaction increases the rate because

    1. Athe activation energy increases
    2. Bparticles get larger
    3. Cmore particles exceed the activation energy and collide more often
    4. Dthe products become more stable
    ( )
  3. 3

    Increasing the pressure on H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g) shifts the equilibrium

    1. Aleft
    2. Bnowhere — equal gas moles on each side
    3. Cright
    4. Dtowards the catalyst
    ( )
  4. 4

The atom economy of a reaction with one desired product of Mr 80 and one waste product of Mr 20 is

    1. A80%
    2. B20%
    3. C75%
    4. D100%

Revision

Before you sit the paper

  • Revise every chapter this paper covers, using the free notes pages.
  • Do the quick quiz on each chapter and note where you lose marks.
  • Practise the topical questions with the mark schemes.
  • Calculators are allowed on every chemistry paper, and the periodic table is printed — learn the formulae that are not given, such as mol = mass ÷ Mr, Rf = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent, and percentage yield.

Tips

Exam tips

Method marks are real marks

  • Show every line of working — method marks are awarded for correct steps even with a slip in the arithmetic.
  • Give mole and concentration answers the units the question asks for: g, mol, g/dm³ or mol/dm³.
  • Check chemical equations balance — an unbalanced equation usually costs the answer mark.
  • Give answers the accuracy asked for, typically 2 or 3 significant figures, and quote a sensible unit with every quantity.

Questions

About the Paper 2-style (Higher)

What does this practice set cover?

Chapters 12–18 at Higher tier: rates with tangent gradients, Le Chatelier and the Haber compromise, percentage yield and atom economy, organic chemistry including condensation polymers, analysis with ion tests and spectroscopy, the atmosphere, and resources.

How should I mark my answers?

Each marking point is one credit. For evaluations, award points for each balanced side plus the justified conclusion, exactly as listed in the mark scheme.

Is this a real exam paper?

No. It is original QuizQuip practice material in the style and length of the Higher Paper 2 formats — not an AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR past paper, with no affiliation to any awarding body.
