Paper 1-style practice: Foundation (chapters 1–11)

One hundred original Foundation marks in the style of Paper 1: ten quick multiple-choice questions, then structured questions across atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, quantitative chemistry, acids, electrolysis and energy changes.

In the style of The Foundation Paper 1 formats (AQA Paper 1, Edexcel Paper 1, OCR Gateway Foundation papers). These are original QuizQuip questions written against the DfE GCSE subject content — not AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR past-paper questions, and QuizQuip is not affiliated with any of the boards.

How to use

Work through it like the real exam

  1. 1Print the paper, or open the PDF and write your answers on paper.
  2. 2Set a timer and work without notes — the real thing is timed and closed-book.
  3. 3Mark your work with the mark scheme, one marking point at a time, including M marks for method.
  4. 4Redo every question you lost marks on, then revise that chapter.

Revision

Before you sit the paper

  • Revise every chapter this paper covers, using the free notes pages.
  • Do the quick quiz on each chapter and note where you lose marks.
  • Practise the topical questions with the mark schemes.
  • Calculators are allowed on every chemistry paper, and the periodic table is printed — learn the formulae that are not given, such as mol = mass ÷ Mr, Rf = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent, and percentage yield.

Tips

Exam tips

Method marks are real marks

  • Show every line of working — method marks are awarded for correct steps even with a slip in the arithmetic.
  • Give mole and concentration answers the units the question asks for: g, mol, g/dm³ or mol/dm³.
  • Check chemical equations balance — an unbalanced equation usually costs the answer mark.
  • Give answers the accuracy asked for, typically 2 or 3 significant figures, and quote a sensible unit with every quantity.

Questions

About the Paper 1-style (Foundation)

What does this practice set cover?

The Foundation statements of chapters 1–11: atomic structure, the periodic table, states of matter and separation, bonding, allotropes of carbon, formulae and conservation of mass, the mole, acids and salts, titration, reactivity and extraction, electrolysis, and energy changes — the content examined in Paper 1.

How should I mark my answers?

Every question has a full mark scheme: one credit per marking point. Add up the credits per part and be strict with yourself — the wording of each point is what real mark schemes reward.

Is this a real exam paper?

No. It is original QuizQuip practice material written in the style and length of the Foundation Paper 1 formats. It is not an AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR past paper, and QuizQuip is not affiliated with or endorsed by any awarding body.
