How to use
Work through it like the real exam
- 1Print the paper, or open the PDF and write your answers on paper.
- 2Set a timer and work without notes — the real thing is timed and closed-book.
- 3Mark your work with the mark scheme, one marking point at a time, including M marks for method.
- 4Redo every question you lost marks on, then revise that topic.

Revision
Before you sit the paper
- Revise every topic this paper covers, using the free notes pages.
- Do the quick quiz on each topic and note where you lose marks.
- Practise the topical questions with the mark schemes.
- On calculator papers, give non-exact answers to 3 significant figures (angles to 1 d.p.) unless told otherwise.
Tips
Exam tips
Method marks are real marks
- Show every line of working — M marks are awarded for correct method even with a slip in the arithmetic.
- Keep unrounded values in your calculator and round only the final answer.
- Give answers the accuracy asked for: 3 s.f., or 1 d.p. for angles in degrees.
- Answer the exact command word: a “solve” needs the value of x, not a check.
Questions
About the Paper 2 style
What makes Paper 2 different from Paper 4?
Both are Extended (higher-tier) papers worth 70 and 100 marks respectively, but **Paper 2 is a non-calculator paper**: the numbers are chosen so that surds, exact trig values and tidy fractions appear instead of long decimals. Speed with fraction arithmetic and factorising matters more than button-pushing.
Which exact trig values do I need to memorise?
The sine, cosine and tangent values at 0°, 30°, 45° and 60° (sin and cos also at 90°). They come from the half-square (45-45-90) and the half-equilateral (30-60-90) triangles. Questions on this paper expect the exact forms — ½, √2⁄2, √3⁄2, √3, 1⁄√3 — not decimal approximations.
How do bounds questions usually work?
A value given to 1 decimal place can be anything within half a unit of the stated figure: 8.4 really means [8.35, 8.45). Upper bounds maximise a calculation, lower bounds minimise it. For a sum, add the two upper bounds; for a quotient, divide the biggest by the smallest.
