  1. 1Print the paper, or open the PDF and write your answers on paper.
  2. 2Set a timer and work without notes — the real thing is timed and closed-book.
  3. 3Mark your work with the mark scheme, one marking point at a time, including M marks for method.
  4. 4Redo every question you lost marks on, then revise that topic.

Before you sit the paper

  • Revise every topic this paper covers, using the free notes pages.

Tips

Exam tips

Method marks are real marks

  • Show every line of working — M marks are awarded for correct method even with a slip in the arithmetic.
  • Keep unrounded values in your calculator and round only the final answer.
  • Give answers the accuracy asked for: 3 s.f., or 1 d.p. for angles in degrees.
  • Answer the exact command word: a “solve” needs the value of x, not a check.

Questions

About the Paper 1 & 3 style

What is the difference between the Core and Extended maths papers?

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is tiered: **Core** candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and can achieve grades C to G, while **Extended** candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can reach the full A* range. Extended papers include everything in Core plus extra content such as bounds, functions, calculus, vectors, sine and cosine rules, and conditional probability. This practice set models the Core papers only.

Do I really need working on a non-calculator paper?

Yes — method marks are awarded for correct steps even when the final answer slips. Write the key line of working for every structured question: the converted fraction, the rearranged equation, the substituted values. An unsupported answer risks losing the method marks.

How should I pace this paper?

This paper mirrors the Core length: 80 marks in 120 minutes works out at about 90 seconds per mark. The multiple-choice section should take around 12 minutes, leaving roughly 100 minutes for the structured questions — about 7 minutes each — with time to check at the end.
