Sec 4 Combined Science (Physics) Prelim practice paper

The Prelim is the full-dress rehearsal for the O-Level paper: the whole Combined Science (Physics) syllabus in one sitting. Waves and light from the start of Sec 4, plus the electricity block, practical electricity, magnetism and radioactivity — the later chapters usually carry the most marks.

  2. 2

A radio wave has frequency 150 MHz. Its wavelength is

    1. A0.5 m
    2. B4.5 × 10⁸ m
    3. C2.0 m
    4. D45 m

    4. Dgamma rays
    ( )
  4. 4

A ray exits a glass block into air. It bends

    1. Aaway from the normal

Revision checklist

  • Drill Q = It, R = V ÷ I and P = VI until each is instant, including unit conversions.
  • Rehearse the mixed-circuit routine: collapse parallel pairs, add series, I = V ÷ R, then work inward.
  • Know the three-pin plug cold: wire colours, fuse placement on the live, earthing vs double insulation.
  • Describe the motor-effect experiment and apply Fleming’s left-hand rule to diagrams.
  • Practise half-life tables and curves, always subtracting background first.
  • Sit the Chapter 4–8 quizzes first, then Chapters 1–3, then this paper in one 120-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Budget roughly a mark a minute and bank the multiple-choice section early.
  • Show every formula before substituting — method marks survive arithmetic slips.
  • For safety questions, name the wire, the colour and the reason — all three parts score.
  • State assumptions (no air resistance, constant resistance) when a question says "state one".

Questions about the Prelim

What is tested in the Sec 4 Combined Science (Physics) Prelim?

Schools usually set the whole Sec 4 syllabus — waves, EM spectrum, light, charge and current, D.C. circuits, practical electricity, magnetism and radioactivity — and some include Sec 3 mechanics. This paper targets the eight Sec 4 chapters with emphasis on electricity and radioactivity.

How long is the Prelim paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 80 marks and takes 120 minutes, with twenty multiple-choice questions and seven structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the Combined Science 5086/5087 Physics component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
