Exam tips
Marks come from key words
- Give the number of marks’ worth of points the question asks for.
- Name the substance, then explain — do not explain without naming.
- In calculations, show the equation, substitute, then give the unit.
- In Paper 6-style questions, write the observation, not the conclusion.
Questions
About the Paper 2 style
Is this the real Cambridge Paper 2?
No. It is an original QuizQuip practice set written in the style of Paper 2 so you can rehearse the format and the timing. It is not a Cambridge past paper, and QuizQuip writes all of its own questions.
How long should the twenty questions take?
The real Extended multiple-choice paper gives 45 minutes for 40 questions, which is about one minute per question plus reading time. This 20-question set is timed at 25 minutes to keep the same pace.
Does this set cover Core or Extended material?
It is an Extended set: most questions are answerable from the Core statements, and several also test Supplement statements, such as mole and gas calculations, bond energies and amphoteric oxides.
Do I need to show working?
No. Only the letter A, B, C or D is marked. For calculation questions it still helps to write the working in the margin so you can check a slip before you commit to an answer.
