Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 Physics WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 Physics year, held around the end of Term 1. It checks the measurement toolkit and the first mechanics block: physical quantities and units, kinematics from graphs, and dynamics with Newton’s laws.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Which of the following is a base quantity?

    1. Aforce
    2. Blength
    3. Cpressure
    4. Denergy
    ( )
  2. 2

A wire has a diameter of 25 mm. In metres this is

    1. A0.0025 m
    2. B0.025 m
    3. C0.25 m
    4. D250 m
    ( )
  3. 3

    Which quantity is a scalar?

    1. Adistance
    2. Bdisplacement
    3. Cvelocity
    4. Dacceleration
    ( )
  4. 4

The instrument that measures the diameter of a wire to the nearest 0.01 mm is the

    1. Ametre rule
    2. Bvernier calipers
    3. Cmeasuring tape
    4. Dmicrometer screw gauge
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Match each measuring instrument to its precision: metre rule (0.1 cm), vernier calipers (0.01 cm), micrometer screw gauge (0.01 mm).
  • Convert prefixes fluently: mm to m, cm³ to m³, and read scales with zero-error reasoning.
  • Sketch and read distance–time and speed–time graphs: gradient, area and the shapes for rest, constant speed and uniform acceleration.
  • Apply v = u + at and s = ut + ½at² with g = 10 m/s² for free fall from rest.
  • Use F = ma with the resultant force, and explain terminal velocity as zero resultant force.
  • Sit the Chapter 1–3 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Quote units with every calculated answer — a missing unit costs the answer mark.
  • In timing questions, divide the total time by the number of oscillations before quoting the period.
  • State the equation you use before substituting numbers; method marks survive arithmetic slips.
  • On speed–time graphs, say which region is which: gradient for acceleration, area for distance.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 Physics WA1?

Most schools test Chapters 1–3: measurement instruments and prefixes, scalars and vectors, kinematics graphs and equations, and dynamics with F = ma, weight and free fall. Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions, in the style most schools use for a Physics WA.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6091 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
