Sec 3 Biology EOY practice paper

The End-of-Year examination covers the whole Sec 3 Biology year in one sitting: cells and their chemistry, the digestive, transport, breathing and excretory systems, plus the movement of substances that underpins them all. It is the first full-length rehearsal of O-Level-style papers.

Section A: Multiple choice[20 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

The organelle that photosynthesises is the

    1. Amitochondrion
    2. Bchloroplast
    3. Cribosome
    4. Dnucleus
    ( )
  2. 2

    A cell’s chromosome-containing control centre is the

    1. Anucleus
    2. Bvacuole
    3. Ccell membrane
    4. Dcytoplasm
    ( )
  3. 3

Active transport differs from diffusion because it

    1. Amoves particles against the gradient using energy
    2. Bonly moves water
    3. Conly happens in plant cells
    4. Dmoves particles down the gradient
    ( )
  4. 4

A plant cell placed in pure water becomes turgid because

    1. Awater leaves the vacuole
    2. Bthe wall dissolves
    3. Csolutes leave the cell
    4. Dwater enters by osmosis and presses the cytoplasm against the wall
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Re-learn the vocabulary actively: organelles, water potential, genotype-style precision applies here too — gradient direction, optimum pH, systole and diastole.
  • Drill the multi-step calculations: magnification, ventilation rate, cardiac output, percentage mass change in osmosis.
  • Practise explain questions in mark-scheme language: adaptation linked to function, one idea per mark.
  • Refresh each system’s diagram set: alimentary canal, heart, gas-exchange tree, nephron.
  • Sit all seven chapter quizzes, then this paper in one 90-minute block under exam conditions.

Exam tips

  • About 1.5 minutes per mark: 60 marks means checking your pace every 15 marks, not every question.
  • For every calculation, write the formula, the substitution with units, then the answer to 3 s.f.
  • Explain questions: count the marks and give that many distinct points — one idea per sentence.
  • If a question mixes topics (an alveolus with a capillary), answer each part with that part’s own biology, not a blend.

Questions about the EOY

What is tested in the Sec 3 Biology EOY?

All seven Sec 3 chapters: cell structure, movement of substances, biological molecules and enzymes, human nutrition, transport, respiration and excretion. Schools weight the papers differently; the common format is multiple-choice plus structured questions.

How long is the EOY paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 60 marks and takes 90 minutes — twenty multiple-choice questions and five structured questions, close to the pacing of a full O-Level-style sitting.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6093 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
