Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 4 Combined Science (Physics) WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 4 Combined Science (Physics) half, held towards the end of Term 1. It tests the waves toolkit — wave terms, v = fλ, sound and echoes — plus the electromagnetic spectrum and the reflection–refraction–lens story of light.

    1. A40 s
    2. B0.40 s
    3. C0.025 s
    4. D0.0025 s

    ( )
  4. 4

Which of these waves is longitudinal?

    1. Aa rope wave
    2. Blight
    3. Cwater ripples
    4. Dsound
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Work v = fλ forwards and backwards, converting MHz and kHz before dividing.
  • Describe waves with all five terms (speed, frequency, wavelength, period, amplitude) and both graph types.
  • List the seven EM regions in order and match each to a use and a hazard.
  • Draw reflection and refraction ray diagrams with the normal marked; measure angles from it.
  • Quote the converging-lens image table (beyond 2F, at 2F, F–2F, inside F) from memory.
  • Sit the Chapter 1–3 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Always draw the normal first in ray questions — angles are measured from it.
  • In v = fλ questions, convert prefixes (MHz, nm) before any division.
  • Echo questions carry a factor of 2: state the out-and-back trip explicitly.
  • Name lens images with all three descriptors: real/virtual, upright/inverted, magnified/diminished.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 4 Combined Science (Physics) WA1?

Most schools test Chapters 1–3: wave terms and v = fλ, sound and echoes, the EM spectrum with uses and hazards, and light — reflection, refraction with sin i/sin r, refractive index and converging-lens images. Your school’s outline gives the exact scope.

Is total internal reflection tested?

Not in Combined Science — total internal reflection and critical angle are Pure Physics topics. This paper stays within the Combined syllabus.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB.
