Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 4 Combined Science (Chemistry) WA1 practice paper

WA1 opens the Sec 4 chemistry half, usually in Term 1. It checks redox thinking — oxygen, electrons and oxidation states — and the patterns of the Periodic Table: Groups I and 17, displacement and the reactivity series with rusting.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

In the reaction CuO + H₂ → Cu + H₂O, the substance reduced is

    1. ACuO, because it loses oxygen
    2. BH₂, because it gains oxygen
    3. CCu, because it turns brown
    4. DH₂O, because it is a product
    ( )
  2. 2

In terms of electrons, oxidation is

    1. Again of electrons
    2. Bgain of protons
    3. Closs of neutrons
    4. Dloss of electrons
    ( )
  3. 3

The oxidation state of sulfur in sulfuric acid, H₂SO₄, is (H = +1, O = −2)

    1. A+4
    2. B+6
    3. C−2
    4. D+2
    ( )
  4. 4

Acidified potassium manganate(VII) loses its purple colour when shaken with a solution. The solution contains

    1. Aan oxidising agent
    2. Ba catalyst
    3. Cwater only
    4. Da reducing agent
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Define oxidation and reduction in terms of oxygen, hydrogen and electrons, and spot each in an equation.
  • Assign oxidation states in compounds and ions, and identify oxidising and reducing agents including the KI and acidified manganate(VII) tests.
  • Link electron arrangements to groups and periods, and predict Group I and Group 17 reactions.
  • Use displacement results to build the reactivity series and write the ionic equations.
  • State the oxygen-and-water requirement of rusting and evaluate barriers against it.
  • Sit the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • For every redox answer, name the substance AND the change — “CuO is reduced because it loses oxygen”.
  • OIL RIG keeps electron directions straight: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain.
  • In displacement questions, one sentence per piece of evidence, then the ordered series.
  • Rusting answers must mention both oxygen and water — one without the other scores half.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 4 Combined Science (Chemistry) WA1?

Typically Chapter 1 (oxidation and reduction via oxygen, hydrogen, electrons and oxidation states; tests for oxidising and reducing agents) and Chapter 2 (periodic patterns, Group I and Group 17, the reactivity series, displacement, rusting and its prevention).

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the Combined Science 5086/5088 Chemistry component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB.
