Section A: Multiple choice[20 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

In the reaction ZnO + C → Zn + CO, the substance that has been oxidised is

    1. AC, because it gains oxygen
    2. BZnO, because it loses oxygen
    3. CZn, because it is a metal
    4. DCO, because it is a gas
    ( )
  2. 2

    The oxidation state of manganese in KMnO₄ is (K = +1, O = −2)

    1. A+5
    2. B+6
    3. C+7
    4. D+8
    ( )
  3. 3

A solution turns acidified potassium manganate(VII) from purple to colourless. The solution

    1. Agives electrons away and is itself oxidised
    2. Bgives electrons away and is itself reduced
    3. Ctakes electrons and is itself oxidised
    4. Dtakes electrons and is itself reduced
    ( )
  4. 4

Atoms of elements in the same period have the same

    1. Anumber of outer electrons
    2. Bnumber of neutrons
    3. Cmetallic character
    4. Dnumber of occupied electron shells
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Re-derive oxidation states and half-equations until they are automatic.
  • Predict Group I and Group 17 reactions and build the reactivity series from displacement data.
  • Explain every rate factor with collisions, and read volume–time and mass–time graphs.
  • Write the organic equations: combustion, substitution, cracking, fermentation, oxidation of ethanol, polymerisation.
  • Link each air pollutant to its source chemistry and both acid-rain effects.
  • Sit the chapter practice papers first, then this prelim in one timed 120-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Budget one minute per mark — 80 marks in 120 minutes leaves about 40 minutes of slack for checking.
  • State the obvious chemical sentence in “explain” answers: name the substance, the change, and the effect.
  • For calculation questions, carry exact values and round only at the end to 3 significant figures.
  • Every balanced equation earns its own mark — never leave one unwritten.

Questions about the Prelim

What is tested in the Sec 4 Combined Science (Chemistry) Prelim?

The full Sec 4 year — redox, periodic patterns with the reactivity series, energetics, rates, organic chemistry and air quality — usually weighted towards the Sec 4 topics, with Sec 3 skills assumed.

How should I revise for the prelim?

Drill chapter by chapter with the topical questions and chapter practice papers, then sit this paper in one timed block. Log every dropped mark by chapter and re-drill your two weakest before your school’s prelim.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host past examination papers.
