Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 4 Physics WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 4 year, held around the end of Term 1. It checks the waves block: general wave properties, the electromagnetic spectrum, reflection and refraction of light, and thin converging lenses.

  1. 1

20 complete water waves pass a point in 4.0 s. The frequency of the waves is

    1. A0.20 Hz
    2. B5.0 Hz
    3. C16 Hz
    4. D80 Hz
    ( )
  2. 2

Revision checklist

  • Wave arithmetic: v = fλ with unit conversions (cm to m), and reading wave quantities off diagrams.
  • Place every electromagnetic wave in frequency order and match two uses and one danger each.
  • Reflection and refraction: measure angles from the normal, apply n = sin i ÷ sin r, and sketch refraction into denser and less dense media.
  • Compute critical angles with sin c = 1/n and explain total internal reflection with both conditions.
  • Draw ray diagrams for a converging lens and link object position to image type and size; use 1/f = 1/u + 1/v and m = v/u.
  • Sit the Chapter 1–4 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Angles in optics are always measured from the normal — a 30° angle to the surface is a 60° angle of incidence.
  • Check each spectrum answer against the fixed frequency order; the order never changes.
  • In lens problems, name three image properties (real/virtual, upright/inverted, magnified/diminished) for full credit.
  • Keep speeds of light as powers of ten: 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s in air, and divide by n inside glass.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 4 Physics WA1?

Most schools test Chapters 1–4: general wave properties with v = fλ, the electromagnetic spectrum, reflection and refraction including total internal reflection, and thin converging lenses. Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions in the style most schools use for a Physics WA.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6091 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
