Sec 4 E-Math Prelim practice paper

The preliminary examination is the full-dress rehearsal for the national examination: the entire E-Math syllabus in one long sitting. Prelim results feed school indications and the final grade conversation, so they are treated seriously. This original paper matches the endurance demand — 80 marks in 120 minutes.

Section A: Structured questions[80 marks]

Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place for angles in degrees, unless told otherwise.

  1. 1

Answer all parts of this question.

    1. (a)

      Express 6,340,000 in standard form.

      Answer =[1]
    2. (b)

      Giving your answer in standard form, evaluate (2.4 × 10⁻³) ÷ (8 × 10⁶).

      [2]
    3. (c)

Evaluate √52.4, correct to 2 decimal places.

      [1]
  2. 2

Answer all parts of this question.

    1. (a)

Express the ratio 2.4 kg : 600 g in its simplest form.

      [2]
    2. (b)

The price of a helmet rose from $45 to $51.30. Find the percentage increase.

      [2]
  3. 3

A loan club holds $3,600 for a member.

    1. (a)

Find the simple interest earned in 8 months at 2.5% per year.

      [2]
    2. (b)

Find the value of the sum after 2 years at 2.5% per year, compounded yearly.

      [2]
  4. 4

Answer all parts of this question.

    1. (a)

      Factorise x² − 11x + 24.

      [2]
    2. (b)

      Simplify (2x + 3)/(x − 1) − (x + 1)/(x − 1).

Revision checklist

  • Run the algebra toolkit once end to end: standard form, factorising, simultaneous equations, inequality lists.
  • Complete the square and read turning points, then solve from the completed-square form to 2 d.p.
  • Chain circle theorems with reasons, and compute a chord length from a central angle.
  • Do one full bearings question: Pythagoras, an inverse tangent, and the three-figure bearing.
  • Compute arc length and sector area, then fold a sector into a cone and track the circumference.
  • Finish with statistics and probability: mean, median, standard deviation, and a without-replacement tree.

Exam tips

  • Pace at about 1.5 minutes per mark and bank the first pass through every starter part.
  • Carry exact values (π, √, fractions) through the working and round once, at the final line.
  • Bearings: sketch north arrows first, and quote the angle as three digits.
  • Answer the question asked — "how much more" needs a subtraction, "state" needs no working.

Questions about the Prelim

What is tested in the Sec 4 E-Math prelim?

The whole O-Level 4052 / SEC G3 K310 syllabus, with emphasis on the Sec 4 topics — coordinate geometry, vectors, statistics, probability and real-world contexts — while Sec 3 algebra, geometry and trigonometry are assumed throughout. Most schools mirror the national two-paper structure in compressed form.

How long should the prelim take?

Schools set prelims close to the national format (two papers totalling about 3¾ hours in the real examination). This practice paper compresses the experience into 80 marks in 120 minutes of structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school prelim?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
