Question paper
Prelim Practice Paper
80 marks · 2 h · 9 pages
9 multiple-choice questions and structured questions with answer lines. The full Sec 4 syllabus (Chapters 1–6).
The preliminary examination is the full-dress rehearsal for the national examination: the entire Sec 4 syllabus in one long sitting. Prelim results also feed school ranking and JAE indications, so they are treated seriously. This original paper matches the endurance demand — 80 marks in 120 minutes.
Set out like a school paper, with a separate mark scheme for checking.

Mark scheme
PROAnswers · Marking points · 4 pages
Model answers with a mark for each creditworthy point — for marking at home or in class.
The full Sec 4 syllabus: further trigonometry (compound angles, double angles, the R-formula), proofs in plane geometry, linear law, differentiation and its applications, integration and areas, and kinematics — with Sec 3 topics assumed.
The first questions of Section A, as they appear on the paper.
Section A: Structured questions[80 marks]
Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place for angles in degrees, unless told otherwise. You may use lg 2 = 0.30 and lg 3 = 0.48.
It is given that 2 sin θ − 5 cos θ can be written as R sin(θ − α), where R > 0 and 0° < α < 90°.
State the value of R, giving your answer correct to 3 significant figures, and the value of α correct to 1 decimal place.
Write down the maximum value of 2 sin θ − 5 cos θ.
Hence find the values of θ in 0° ≤ θ ≤ 360° satisfying 2 sin θ − 5 cos θ = 4, correct to 1 decimal place.
It is given that cos A = 5/13, where A is an acute angle. Do not use a calculator in this question.
Write down the value of sin A.
Find the exact values of sin 2A and cos 2A.
Hence explain, without further calculation, whether A is greater or less than 45°.
The points A, B and C lie on a circle with centre O, and angle AOB = 140°, standing on the chord AB. C lies on the major arc AB. The tangent to the circle at A is drawn.
Find angle ACB.
Find angle OAB, explaining your method.
Find the angle between the tangent at A and the chord AB, and name the theorem used.
In triangle PQR, the point M lies on PQ with PM = 6 cm and MQ = 6 cm, and the point N lies on PR with PN = 5 cm and NR = 5 cm.
Show that triangles PMN and PQR are similar.
Given QR = 14 cm, find MN. State the name of the theorem also implied by this result.
Given that the area of triangle PMN is 8 cm², find the area of triangle PQR.
The whole O-Level 4049 / SEC G3 K341 syllabus, with emphasis on the Sec 4 topics: further trigonometry, plane geometry proofs, linear law, differentiation, integration and kinematics — with Sec 3 algebra and coordinate geometry assumed throughout.
Schools set prelims close to the national format (two papers of 2 h 15 min in the real examination). This practice paper compresses the experience into 80 marks in 120 minutes of structured questions.
