Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) half, held towards the end of Term 1. It checks the measurement toolkit — units, prefixes, instrument choice, scalars and vectors — and the kinematics that turns distance-time data into speeds and accelerations.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

A wire has a diameter of 0.40 mm. Which instrument gives a reading precise enough to check this value?

    1. Aa metre rule
    2. Ba measuring tape
    3. Ca micrometer screw gauge
    4. Da pair of dividers
    ( )
  2. 2

A beaker contains 25 cm³ of liquid. Which apparatus measures this volume most precisely?

    1. Aa 100 cm³ beaker
    2. Ba 50 cm³ measuring cylinder
    3. Ca 25 cm³ pipette
    4. Da 500 cm³ measuring cylinder
    ( )
  3. 3

    Which is a vector quantity?

    1. Adistance
    2. Bspeed
    3. Ctime
    4. Dvelocity
    ( )
  4. 4

    A jogger runs 150 m in 25 s. Her average speed is

    1. A0.17 m/s
    2. B6.0 m/s
    3. C25 m/s
    4. D3750 m/s
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Choose instruments by precision: metre rule for centimetres, vernier calipers for small gaps, micrometer for wire diameters, pipette for fixed volumes.
  • Convert prefixes fluently (mm → m, cm³ → m³, km/h → m/s by ÷3.6).
  • Classify quantities as scalars (distance, speed, time, energy) or vectors (displacement, velocity, force).
  • Compute average speed as total distance ÷ total time — never the average of two speeds with unequal times.
  • Read both graphs: gradient of distance-time = speed; gradient of speed-time = acceleration; area under speed-time = distance.
  • Sit the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Quote units with every answer — a speed without m/s loses the last mark.
  • Convert before substituting: minutes to seconds, cm to m, km/h to m/s.
  • On graphs, say which points you used ("from 4 m/s to 12 m/s in 4 s").
  • Use the marks as a guide: a 3-mark "explain" needs three distinct points.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) WA1?

Most schools test Chapter 1 (SI units, prefixes, instrument choice and precision, scalars and vectors) and Chapter 2 (speed, velocity, acceleration, distance-time and speed-time graphs, free fall). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the Combined Science 5086/5087 Physics component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
