Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) EOY practice paper

The EOY examines the whole Sec 3 physics year: measurement and kinematics, forces, pressure and moments, energy and power, and the thermal physics pair — the kinetic particle model and thermal processes. Later chapters usually carry extra weight, so revise energy and thermal physics last-minute-proof.

Section A: Multiple choice[20 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

47 mm written in metres is

    1. A0.047 m
    2. B0.47 m
    3. C4.7 m
    4. D470 m
    ( )
  2. 2

Which instrument is most suitable for measuring the internal diameter of a narrow test tube?

    1. Aa metre rule
    2. Bvernier calipers

  3. 3

    A cyclist covers 300 m in 20 s. Her average speed is

    1. A6000 m/s
    2. B0.067 m/s
    3. C15 m/s
    4. D20 m/s
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Drill the four energy formulas (½mv², mgh, Fd, E ÷ t) and the conservation story for falling and bouncing objects.
  • Rehearse the particle-model explanations: melting and boiling at constant temperature, convection by density, conduction by vibrations and electrons.
  • Keep the mechanics toolkit sharp: v = fλ is Sec 4, but v = d ÷ t, a = Δv ÷ t and moments are examinable now.
  • Practise graph work: gradients and areas, including the triangle area for deceleration.
  • Sit the Chapter 6–8 quizzes first (latest chapters), then Chapters 1–5, then this paper in one 90-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Split long questions into parts and answer in the order of the marks.
  • In energy questions, name the stores and the pathway, then compute.
  • In thermal questions, write arrangement-separation-motion or KE-PE explicitly — vague "particles move faster" scores little.
  • Check every numerical answer’s unit before moving on.

Questions about the EOY

What is tested in Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) EOY?

The whole Sec 3 year: measurement, kinematics, force and pressure, dynamics, moments, energy, work and power, the kinetic particle model, and thermal processes. Most schools weight the later chapters more heavily.

How long is the EOY paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 60 marks and takes 90 minutes, with twenty multiple-choice questions and five structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the Combined Science 5086/5087 Physics component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
