Sec 3 Combined Science (Chemistry) EOY practice paper

The end-of-year examination is the big Sec 3 assessment: every chapter from experimental chemistry to qualitative analysis in one sitting. It is the closest rehearsal for the O-Level experience, so coverage and stamina matter as much as technique.

Section A: Multiple choice[20 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Dry crystals of copper(II) sulfate are obtained from its solution by

    1. Afiltering and drying the residue
    2. Bevaporating all the water strongly, then sweeping the powder
    3. Cheating to crystallisation point, cooling, then drying the crystals
    4. Ddistilling the solution and collecting the distillate
    ( )
  2. 2

Hydrogen is insoluble in water and much less dense than air. It is collected by

    1. Adownward delivery (upward displacement of air)
    2. Bupward delivery (downward displacement of air)
    3. Ca gas syringe only
    4. Dnone of these
    ( )
  3. 3

A solid melts sharply at exactly one temperature. This shows the solid is

    1. Aa pure substance
    2. Ba mixture
    3. Can alloy
    4. Dstill wet
    ( )
  4. 4

    In a liquid, the particles

    1. Avibrate about fixed positions only
    2. Bare far apart and move randomly at high speed
    3. Cslide and tumble past one another while staying close together
    4. Dstop moving at low temperature
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Rehearse separation choices and chromatogram reading once more — they appear in almost every school EOY.
  • Explain changes of state with particles, energy and forces in full sentences.
  • Drill one of each calculation type: mass → moles → gas volume, and a titration concentration.
  • Write the acid–metal, acid–carbonate and neutralisation equations, including the ionic form.
  • Rehearse the qualitative-analysis tables: cation precipitates with NaOH and aqueous ammonia, anion tests and the gas tests.
  • Mark a full topical-questions set, log every dropped mark by chapter, then sit this paper in 90 minutes.

Exam tips

  • Budget roughly 1.5 minutes per mark — 60 marks in 90 minutes leaves little slack.
  • Carry exact values through calculation parts and round only the final answer to 3 significant figures.
  • In qualitative analysis, name the reagent, the observation and the ion — all three are usually needed.
  • Check every equation balances; unbalanced equations lose the equation mark even when the rest is right.

Questions about the EOY

What is tested in the Sec 3 Combined Science (Chemistry) EOY?

Everything from the Sec 3 year: experimental chemistry, particles, bonding, calculations, acids and bases, and qualitative analysis — usually in one mixed paper of multiple-choice and structured questions.

How should I revise for the EOY?

Revise chapter by chapter with the topical questions, then sit this paper in one 90-minute block and mark it with the mark scheme. Log every dropped mark against its chapter and re-drill your two weakest chapters before your school’s paper.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host past examination papers.
