Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) half, held towards the end of Term 1. It checks the cell toolkit — structures and functions, animal-versus-plant comparisons, mitochondria and ribosomes, specialised cells — and the movement of substances: diffusion, osmosis and their effects on plant and animal tissues.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Which structure controls the activities of a cell?

    1. Acytoplasm
    2. Bcell wall
    3. Cnucleus
    4. Dvacuole
    ( )
  2. 2

Which structure is present in a typical plant cell but absent from a typical animal cell?

    1. Acell membrane
    2. Bnucleus
    3. Cmitochondrion
    4. Dcell wall
    ( )
  3. 3

Which structure can only be seen with an electron microscope?

    1. Achloroplast
    2. Bcell wall
    3. Cnucleus
    4. Dribosome
    ( )
  4. 4

The long extension of a root hair cell helps absorption by

    1. Astoring water
    2. Bincreasing the surface area in contact with soil water
    3. Cproducing chlorophyll
    4. Dmaking the cell rigid
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Match each organelle to its function: wall, membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuoles, chloroplasts, mitochondria, ribosomes.
  • Rehearse the three standard plant-versus-animal differences: wall, chloroplasts, permanent vacuole.
  • Define diffusion and osmosis precisely — substance moved, direction, and (for osmosis) the partially permeable membrane.
  • Practise percentage-change calculations for potato-strip style data.
  • Link each specialised cell (muscle, root hair, red blood cell) to its structure–function pairs.
  • Sit the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • In definition questions, name the substance moved and the direction — one without the other scores half.
  • Adaptation answers follow the pattern: state the job, name the feature, link feature to function.
  • Quote units in every calculation (%, cm per minute, g).
  • Use the marks as a guide: a 4-mark "explain" needs four distinct points.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) WA1?

Most schools test Chapter 1 (cell structures and functions, animal versus plant cells, specialised cells) and Chapter 2 (diffusion, osmosis, effects on plant and animal tissues). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the Combined Science 5088 Biology component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
