Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) EOY practice paper

The end-of-year examination covers the whole Sec 3 biology half: cells and movement of substances, biological molecules and human nutrition, transport in humans, and respiration in humans. Expect questions that link chapters — nutrients absorbed in the gut travelling in blood plasma, oxygen picked up by haemoglobin at the alveoli, glucose burned in respiration.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Chloroplasts are absent from root hair cells because

    1. Aroots store starch instead
    2. Broots grow underground without light
    3. Croot cells are animal cells
    4. Dchloroplasts dissolve in soil water
    ( )
  2. 2

Water moves by osmosis towards the solution that is

    1. Amore dilute
    2. Bmore concentrated
    3. Cwarmer
    4. Dclearer
    ( )
  3. 3

Which reagent turns purple with protein?

    1. Aiodine
    2. BBenedict's
    3. Cbiuret
    4. Dethanol
    ( )
  4. 4

    Denaturation stops an enzyme because

    1. Athe substrate is destroyed
    2. Bthe active site loses its shape
    3. Cthe enzyme dissolves
    4. Dthe pH rises to 14

Revision checklist

  • Rebuild the chapter map: cells → movement of substances → biological molecules → nutrition → transport → respiration.
  • Link chapters deliberately: absorption (Ch 4) feeds plasma transport (Ch 5); alveolar oxygen (Ch 6) loads haemoglobin (Ch 5).
  • Rehearse both respiration word equations and the oxygen-debt storyline.
  • Practise the vessel map and blood-component tables until they are automatic.
  • Redo the WA1 and WA2 papers first, then sit this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Cross-chapter questions want the links named — say which chapter's process feeds which.
  • Keep the two pipelines straight: xylem-water, phloem-food in plants; arteries-away, veins-back in humans.
  • Write word equations in full — reactants, products and conditions.
  • Answer the question asked: "state" needs one line, "explain" needs the mechanism.

Questions about the EOY

What is tested in the Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) EOY?

Usually all six Sec 3 chapters: cell structure, movement of substances, biological molecules, nutrition in humans, transport in humans and respiration in humans — often weighted towards the later chapters. Your school’s outline confirms the emphasis.

How long is the EOY paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions across all chapters.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the Combined Science 5088 Biology component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
