Term 2G2 / G3

Sec 3 E-Math WA2 practice paper

WA2 is usually the Term 2 assessment. In the common scheme it covers the middle of the Sec 3 algebra strand: algebraic expressions and formulae, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, with set language and matrices appearing as Term 2 closes.

What’s tested

Commonly Chapters 4–8 (algebraic expressions and formulae, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, set language and notation, matrices). Some schools test only Chapters 4–6, so check your school’s outline.

Section A: Structured questions[40 marks]

Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, unless told otherwise.

  1. 1

Answer all parts of this question.

    1. (a)

      Factorise 6x² − 17x + 12 completely.

      [2]
    2. (b)

      Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).

      [2]
    3. (c)

      Make h the subject of the formula A = 2πrh + πr².

      [2]
  2. 2

    Solve the following equations.

    1. (a)

      Solve (2x − 1)/3 − (x − 2)/4 = 1.

      [3]
    2. (b)

      Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 2y = 19 and y = 2x − 8.

      [3]
  3. 3

Answer all parts of this question.

    1. (a)

      Solve the inequality 5 − 2x ≥ 3(x − 4).

      [3]
    2. (b)

      List all the integer values of n that satisfy −2 < 3n − 2 ≤ 10.

      [3]
  4. 4

    The curve y = x² − 4x + 1 is drawn for values of x from −1 to 5.

    1. (a)

      Find the value of y when x = 5.

      [1]
    2. (b)

By completing the square, find the coordinates of the minimum point of the curve.

      [3]
    3. (c)

The line y = 2x + k is a tangent to the curve. Find the value of k.

      [3]

Revision checklist

  • Factorise hard quadratics with a non-unit x² coefficient, and factorise algebraic fractions fully before cancelling.
  • Rearrange formulae with brackets and π, making any letter the subject in one clean chain.
  • Solve fractional equations by multiplying through by the common denominator — and check the result.
  • Solve inequalities keeping the sense straight, and list integer solutions from a double inequality.
  • Complete the square on x² + bx + c and read off turning points without a graph.
  • Multiply 2 × 2 matrices quickly and compute determinants with ad − bc.

Exam tips

  • Show every rearrangement line — subject-of-the-formula marks live in the steps, not the answer.
  • After solving a fractional equation, substitute back to confirm no denominator vanishes.
  • For tangency and intersection questions, say "discriminant = 0" before using it.
  • In matrices, quote the row-times-column structure as you work; slabs of numbers earn nothing.

Questions about the WA2

What is tested in Sec 3 E-Math WA2?

Typically Chapters 4–8: algebraic expressions and formulae, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs (including completing the square and tangency conditions), set language with Venn-diagram counting, and 2 × 2 matrix arithmetic. Confirm with your school’s assessment outline.

Do I need to memorise matrix rules?

You need the 2 × 2 multiplication pattern and the ad − bc determinant cold, plus the fact that AB need not equal BA. Anything larger than 2 × 2 is done by careful bookkeeping, not memory tricks.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host past examination papers.
