Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 Biology WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 Biology year, held around the end of Term 1. It checks the microscope-and-cells toolkit and the movement across membranes: cell structures and specialisation, then diffusion, osmosis and active transport with the water-potential reasoning that runs through the rest of the syllabus.

What’s tested

Commonly Chapters 1–2 (cell structure and organisation; movement of substances). Some schools stop earlier in Chapter 2 or stretch further. Check your school’s assessment outline for the exact scope.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Which structure is found in plant cells but not in animal cells?

    1. Aa cell membrane
    2. Bchloroplasts
    3. Ca nucleus
    4. Dmitochondria
    ( )
  2. 2

The organelle that releases energy from glucose in respiration is the

    1. Aribosome
    2. Bchloroplast
    3. Cmitochondrion
    4. Dvacuole
    ( )
  3. 3

A red blood cell is biconcave and has no nucleus. These adaptations help it to

    1. Acarry more haemoglobin and exchange gases quickly
    2. Bmove using a tail
    3. Cphotosynthesise in the bloodstream
    4. Dengulf bacteria
    ( )
  4. 4

Root hair cells absorb water mainly by

    1. Acondensation
    2. Bactive transport
    3. Cphotosynthesis
    4. Dosmosis
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Match each organelle to its job: nucleus (chromosomes), mitochondria (respiration), chloroplasts (photosynthesis), ribosomes (proteins).
  • Practise labelling plant-versus-animal cell diagrams and the specialisations: red blood cell, root hair cell, palisade cell.
  • Define diffusion, osmosis and active transport precisely, each with its gradient direction and energy cost.
  • Reason with water potential: pure water high, salt solution low, and predict swell/shrink for both plant and animal cells.
  • Sit the Chapter 1–2 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Definition questions: name the process, state the gradient direction, and say whether energy is used.
  • For osmosis scenarios, always start from "which side has the higher water potential?" — the direction follows.
  • Label diagrams with straight lines touching the structure; label lines that float lose the mark.
  • Show the percentage-change working: (final − initial) ÷ initial × 100, with the sign.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 Biology WA1?

Most schools test Chapters 1–2: cell structures and organelle functions, cell specialisation, and the movement of substances — diffusion, osmosis and active transport with water-potential reasoning. Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions, in the style most schools use for a Biology WA.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6093 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
