Sec 4 E-Math WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 4 E-Math year, drawn from the opening chapters: coordinate geometry and vectors first, with early statistics (diagram reading, medians and quartiles) close behind.

What’s tested

Commonly Chapters 1–3 (coordinate geometry, vectors in two dimensions, statistical diagrams). Some schools start the year inside statistics instead, so check your school’s assessment outline for the exact scope.

Section A: Structured questions[40 marks]

Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, unless told otherwise.

  1. 1

    The points A and B have coordinates (−1, 3) and (5, −5) respectively.

    1. (a)

Find the coordinates of the midpoint of AB.

      midpoint =[1]
    2. (b)

      Find the length of AB.

      [2]
    3. (c)

      Find the gradient of AB.

      [1]
    4. (d)

The point C lies on the line AB and has x-coordinate 11. Find the y-coordinate of C.

      [2]
  2. 2

The points C(2, 1), D(6, p) and E(6, 1) are marked on a grid. The gradient of CD is 3.

    1. (a)

      Find the value of p.

      [2]
    2. (b)

Find the area of triangle CDE.

      [3]
  3. 3

    It is given that a = (3, −2) and b = (−1, 4), written as column vectors.

    1. (a)

      Find 2a + b as a column vector.

      [2]
    2. (b)

Find the magnitude of a, correct to 3 significant figures.

      [2]
    3. (c)

Given that ma + nb = (5, 0), where m and n are scalars, find the values of m and n.

      [2]
  4. 4

In triangle OPQ, the position vectors are OP = p and OQ = q.

    1. (a)

Write PQ in terms of p and q.

      [1]
    2. (b)

R lies on PQ with PR : RQ = 1 : 2. Write PR in terms of p and q.

      [1]
    3. (c)

Hence write OR in terms of p and q, in its simplest form.

      [2]
    4. (d)

The point G has position vector (1/3)(p + q). Using your answer to (c), show that GR is a scalar multiple of p, and state what this tells you about the line GR and the line OP.

      [3]

Revision checklist

  • Find midpoints, lengths and gradients fluently, then build perpendicular bisectors from the pair.
  • Add and scale column vectors, compute magnitudes with √(x² + y²), and solve for unknown scalars.
  • Express routes in a triangle as combinations of two position vectors, and prove parallelism by a scalar multiple.
  • Read pie chart angles backwards to frequencies, and stem-and-leaf medians from reconstructed values.
  • Move between cumulative frequency tables and class counts, quoting median positions as n/2.
  • Work with translations as column vectors, including finding a pre-image and a magnitude.

Exam tips

  • Write the coordinate-geometry formula before substituting — the line earns the method mark.
  • Vector proofs need the full chain: express, simplify, then state the scalar multiple and conclusion.
  • On statistics parts, quote the reading position (median at CF = n/2) so the examiner sees the method.
  • Round only at the end; √13 stays exact until the final line asks for 3 s.f.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 4 E-Math WA1?

Usually Chapters 1–3: coordinate geometry (midpoint, length, gradient, equations of lines), vectors in two dimensions (column vectors, magnitudes, geometric proofs with parallel vectors), and statistical diagrams (pie charts, stem-and-leaf, cumulative frequency, box plots). Your school’s outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 50 minutes, matching a typical Sec 4 WA length for E-Math. Your school’s paper may be shorter.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the O-Level 4052 / SEC G3 K310 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
