Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 4 Chemistry WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 4 year, drawn from the opening chapters — oxidation and reduction first, with electrolysis close behind. Both chapters lean on the same core skill: tracking electrons.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

    Which change is oxidation?

    1. AFe³⁺ changing to Fe²⁺
    2. BCl₂ changing to Cl⁻
    3. CFe²⁺ changing to Fe³⁺
    4. DO₂ changing to O²⁻
    ( )
  2. 2

In the reaction Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu, the oxidising agent is

    1. AZn
    2. BCuSO₄
    3. CZnSO₄
    4. DCu
    ( )
  3. 3

Which reaction is not a redox reaction?

    1. AZn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂
    2. B2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO
    3. CHNO₃ + KOH → KNO₃ + H₂O
    4. DCuO + H₂ → Cu + H₂O
    ( )
  4. 4

The oxidation state of nitrogen in the nitrate ion, NO₃⁻, is

    1. A+3
    2. B+6
    3. C−3
    4. D+5
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Assign oxidation states using the standard rules, including ions like SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻.
  • Identify the oxidising and reducing agent in any equation, and pair each agent with the species it reduces or oxidises.
  • Write half-equations for oxidation and reduction with balanced atoms, charges and electrons.
  • Predict products for the electrolysis of molten salts, dilute and concentrated aqueous solutions, using the discharge rules.
  • Explain electroplating and copper refining in terms of the anode, cathode and electrolyte.
  • Sit the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 quizzes first, then attempt this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • In every redox answer, name the electron movement — “loses electrons, so it is oxidised” — not just the label.
  • Half-equations must balance atoms and charge; count both before moving on.
  • For electrolysis, start from the ions present, then apply the discharge rules — never guess products.
  • Use the marks as a guide: a 3-mark “explain” needs three distinct points.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 4 Chemistry WA1?

Most schools test Chapter 1 (oxidation states, oxidising and reducing agents, half-equations, rusting and corrosion) and Chapter 2 (electrolysis of molten and aqueous electrolytes, selective discharge, electroplating and the refining of copper). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions, in the style most schools use for a Chemistry WA.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6092 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
