Question paper
WA1 Practice Paper
40 marks · 55 min · 5 pages
6 multiple-choice questions and structured questions with answer lines. Chapters 1–2 (further trigonometry; proofs in plane geometry), with a linear-law item.
WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 4 year, drawn from material taught at the end of Sec 3 and the start of Sec 4 — typically further trigonometry first, with plane geometry and linear law close behind.
Set out like a school paper, with a separate mark scheme for checking.

Mark scheme
PROAnswers · Marking points · 3 pages
Model answers with a mark for each creditworthy point — for marking at home or in class.
Commonly Chapter 1 (compound angles, double angles, the R-formula) and Chapter 2 (proofs in plane geometry), sometimes with a linear-law item. Check your school’s assessment outline for the exact scope.
The first questions of Section A, as they appear on the paper.
Section A: Structured questions[40 marks]
Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place for angles in degrees, unless told otherwise. You may use lg 5 = 0.70.
It is given that 3 cos θ + 4 sin θ can be written in the form R cos(θ − α), where R > 0 and 0° < α < 90°.
State the value of R and the value of α, giving α correct to 1 decimal place.
Write down the maximum and minimum values of 3 cos θ + 4 sin θ.
Hence find the two values of θ in 0° ≤ θ ≤ 360° for which 3 cos θ + 4 sin θ = 2, correct to 1 decimal place.
Do not use a calculator in this question.
Show that cos 15° = (√6 + √2)/4.
Write down the exact value of cos 105°.
It is given that tan A = 3/4, where A is an acute angle.
Find the exact value of tan 2A, as a fraction in its lowest terms.
Hence find all the angles x in 0° ≤ x ≤ 360° that satisfy tan 2x = 24/7, correct to 1 decimal place.
In triangle ABC, D lies on AB with AD = 6 cm and DB = 3 cm, and E lies on AC with AE = 4 cm and EC = 2 cm.
Show that triangles ADE and ABC are similar.
Given BC = 12 cm, find DE.
Given that the area of triangle ADE is 10 cm², find the area of triangle ABC.
Usually Chapter 1 (compound angles, double-angle formulae, the R-formula and harder trigonometric equations) and parts of Chapter 2 (similar triangles, circle theorems, geometric proofs). Some schools add a linear-law item. Your school’s outline gives the exact scope.
Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, matching a typical Sec 4 WA length for A-Math.
