Term 2G2 / G3

Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) WA2 practice paper

WA2 is usually the Term 2 assessment. In the common scheme it covers the mechanics heart of the Sec 3 physics half: mass, weight, density and pressure; Newton’s laws with F = ma and friction; and the turning effects of forces — moments, balance and centre of gravity.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

An astronaut has a mass of 70 kg. On the Moon (gravitational field strength 1.6 N/kg) her weight is

    1. A70 N
    2. B112 N
    3. C700 N
    4. D43.75 N
    ( )
  2. 2

A metal block has mass 240 g and volume 80 cm³. Its density is

    1. A0.33 g/cm³
    2. B3.0 g/cm³
    3. C19200 g/cm³
    4. D320 g/cm³
    ( )
  3. 3

A crate weighing 300 N stands on a floor area of 1.5 m². The pressure it exerts is

    1. A450 Pa
    2. B200 Pa
    3. C300 Pa
    4. D0.005 Pa
    ( )
  4. 4

A resultant force of 12 N acts on a 4.0 kg trolley. Its acceleration is

    1. A3.0 m/s²
    2. B48 m/s²
    3. C0.33 m/s²
    4. D16 m/s²
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Use W = mg with g = 10 N/kg, and keep mass in kg and weight in N strictly separate.
  • Compute density from mass ÷ volume and pressure from force ÷ area, quoting Pa.
  • Find the resultant force first (subtract opposing forces), then apply a = F ÷ m.
  • Explain constant velocity as zero resultant force — not zero forces.
  • Take moments about one named pivot: subtract rule readings to get lever arms, then set clockwise = anticlockwise.
  • Mark your Chapter 3–5 topical questions strictly, then attempt this paper against the clock.

Exam tips

  • Draw a quick free-body sketch before any F = ma calculation — it exposes the resultant.
  • Convert grams to kilograms and centimetres to metres before substituting.
  • State the pivot you are taking moments about; a moment without a pivot is incomplete.
  • In "explain" questions, link the law (first, second, third) to the observation explicitly.

Questions about the WA2

What is tested in Sec 3 Combined Science (Physics) WA2?

Typically Chapter 3 (weight, density, pressure), Chapter 4 (resultant forces, F = ma, friction, Newton’s laws) and Chapter 5 (moments, the principle of moments, centre of gravity). Confirm with your school’s assessment outline.

Do I need to memorise g?

Use g = 10 N/kg (m/s²) throughout Combined Science unless a question states otherwise — it is given on QuizQuip papers and in most school data.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB.
