Term 2G2 / G3

Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) WA2 practice paper

WA2 is usually the Term 2 assessment. In the common scheme it covers the chemistry-of-life heart of the Sec 3 biology half: the roles of carbohydrates, fats and proteins; the four food tests; lock-and-key enzyme action with temperature and pH effects — and human nutrition, from digestive organs and enzymes to the liver, insulin, glucagon and type 2 diabetes.

    1. Acarbohydrates
    2. Bfats
    3. Cproteins
    4. Dmineral salts
    ( )
  2. 2

    1. Astarch
    2. Bglucose
    3. Cprotein
    4. Dfat
    ( )
  3. 3

A heated Benedict's test gives a brick-red precipitate. The sample contains

    1. Ano reducing sugar
    2. Ba low concentration of reducing sugar
    3. Ca high concentration of reducing sugar
    4. Dprotein
    ( )
  4. 4

    1. Aglucose units
    2. Bamino acids
    3. Cglycerol
    4. Dfatty acids
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Match each food class to its role: carbohydrate (immediate energy), fat (storage, insulation), protein (growth and repair).
  • Memorise the four food tests — reagent, method and positive colour.
  • Rehearse the lock-and-key sequence: active site → enzyme–substrate complex → specificity.
  • Practise rate calculations from digestion-time data (rate = 1 ÷ time).
  • Trace a meal through the digestive system naming enzymes and end-products.
  • Explain the insulin–glucagon thermostat in both directions.

Exam tips

  • Enzyme explanations must name the active site and shape complementarity — "breaks it down" alone scores little.
  • On data tables, quote the figures before explaining the trend.
  • Two-step enzyme tables (amylase → maltose → glucose) are marked step by step; do not skip intermediates.
  • Blood glucose answers must pair the hormone with the liver’s response.

Questions about the WA2

What is tested in Sec 3 Combined Science (Biology) WA2?

Most schools test Chapter 3 (food classes and roles, food tests, enzymes, temperature and pH) and Chapter 4 (digestive system, enzymes, liver, hormones, blood glucose regulation). Your school’s Term 2 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA2 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the Combined Science 5088 Biology component. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
