Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 E-Math WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 E-Math year, held towards the end of Term 1. Because Sec 3 opens with the number strand, WA1 normally leans on numbers and their operations, ratio, rate and speed, and percentage — with the first algebra steps close behind.

Section A: Structured questions[40 marks]

Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, unless told otherwise.

  1. 1

Answer the following without a calculator where possible.

    1. (a)

      Express 0.000456 in standard form.

      Answer =[1]
    2. (b)

      Giving your answer in standard form, evaluate (3.2 × 10⁻³) × (5 × 10⁵).

      [2]
    3. (c)

Evaluate √20.9, giving your answer correct to 2 decimal places.

      [1]
    4. (d)

Write 47,853 correct to 3 significant figures.

      [1]
    5. (e)

A length is given as 8.4 cm, measured to the nearest millimetre. State its upper bound.

      [1]
  2. 2

A recipe for 6 people uses 360 g of flour, 4 eggs and 480 ml of milk.

    1. (a)

Find the mass of flour needed for 9 people.

      [2]
    2. (b)

Express the ratio of flour to milk in its simplest form.

      [1]
    3. (c)

A map is drawn to a scale of 1 : 25,000. Two towns are 3.4 cm apart on the map. Find the actual distance between them, in kilometres.

      [2]
    4. (d)

A car then travels the 85 km journey at an average speed of 60 km/h. Find the journey time, in minutes.

      [2]
  3. 3

A fun-run route has two legs: 5 km run at an average speed of 12 km/h, followed by 8 km cycled at 10 km/h.

    1. (a)

Find the time taken for the 5 km leg, in minutes.

      [2]
    2. (b)

Find the total time for both legs, in minutes.

      [2]
    3. (c)

Find the average speed for the whole event, correct to 3 significant figures.

      [2]
  4. 4

A jacket is sold at $96 after a discount of 20% off its usual price.

    1. (a)

Find the usual price of the jacket.

      [2]
    2. (b)

A 9% GST is then added to the $96. Find the final price paid.

      [2]
    3. (c)

Simple interest is earned on $2,400 at 3.5% per year for 18 months. Find the interest.

Revision checklist

  • Drill standard form both ways: converting small decimals in and multiplying or dividing powers of ten.
  • Round confidently: 3 significant figures, 2 decimal places, and upper and lower bounds to the nearest unit.
  • Scale recipes and maps: unitary method and 1 : n scales in both directions.
  • Combine speeds cleanly: time = distance ÷ speed, minutes to hours, and average speed over total time.
  • Reverse percentages: original price after a discount or profit, and GST added at 9%.
  • Tell simple from compound interest at a glance, and quote multipliers like 1.024³.

Exam tips

  • Write the formula line first — time = d ÷ s, I = PRT — then substitute; method marks sit there.
  • Keep units attached in every line: km/h, minutes, dollars, litres.
  • For percentage reversals, divide by the multiplier rather than subtracting the percentage.
  • Check that estimates are the right size before moving on — an $8,000 deposit should not cost $8.00.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 E-Math WA1?

Most schools test Chapters 1–3: numbers and their operations (standard form, rounding, bounds), ratio, rate and speed (scales, unit conversions, average speed), and percentage with personal finance (discounts, GST, simple and compound interest). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 50 minutes, matching a typical Sec 3 WA length for E-Math. Your school’s paper may be shorter or split across two sittings.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are original material written against the O-Level 4052 / SEC G3 K310 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
