Term 1G2 / G3

Sec 3 Chemistry WA1 practice paper

WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 Chemistry year, held towards the end of Term 1. It checks the practical foundations — experimental design, separation and analysis — and the kinetic particle theory that explains everything else.

Section A: Multiple choice[10 marks]

Answer all questions. For each question, write the letter (A, B, C or D) of the correct answer.

  1. 1

Pure water is obtained from a solution of salt in water by

    1. Afiltration
    2. Bevaporation
    3. Cpaper chromatography
    4. Dsimple distillation
    ( )
  2. 2

On a chromatogram, dye X moves 6.2 cm while the solvent front moves 8.0 cm. Which statement about the Rf value of X is correct?

    1. AIt changes if the solvent is allowed to travel further.
    2. BIt is 6.2 ÷ 8.0 = 0.775.
    3. CIt is measured in cm.
    4. DIt would be lower in a solvent that dissolves X better.
    ( )
  3. 3

A pure solid is heated steadily. Its temperature rises, then stays constant for several minutes, then rises again. The constant-temperature region shows the solid is

    1. Amelting at a fixed melting point
    2. Bboiling at a fixed boiling point
    3. Creacting with the air
    4. Dalready a liquid throughout
    ( )
  4. 4

Ammonia gas is soluble in water and less dense than air. It is collected by

    1. Acollection over water
    2. Bupward delivery of air
    3. Cdownward delivery of air
    4. Da gas syringe only
    ( )

Revision checklist

  • Match each separation technique (filtration, evaporation, simple and fractional distillation, chromatography) to a situation and name the property it exploits.
  • Calculate Rf values from a chromatogram and read which dyes a mixture contains.
  • Describe melting, boiling and diffusion using particle diagrams in words: arrangement, separation, motion.
  • Explain the constant-temperature plateaux on heating and cooling curves using energy and particle ideas.
  • Predict which gas diffuses fastest from its relative molecular mass, and connect rate to temperature.
  • Sit the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 quizzes first, then this paper in one 55-minute block.

Exam tips

  • Name the technique and the property it uses — “distillation” alone earns less than “distillation because the liquids boil at different temperatures”.
  • In particle-theory answers, always write about arrangement, separation and motion as three separate points.
  • Rf values have no units; quote them to two decimal places.
  • Use the marks as a guide: a 3-mark “explain” needs three distinct points.

Questions about the WA1

What is tested in Sec 3 Chemistry WA1?

Most schools test Chapter 1 (experimental design, separation and purification, chromatography, purity and gas collection) and Chapter 2 (kinetic particle theory: states, changes of state, diffusion). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.

How long is the WA1 paper?

Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, mixing ten multiple-choice questions with structured questions, in the style most schools use for a Chemistry WA.

Is this paper based on a real school paper?

No. QuizQuip papers are written from scratch against the O-Level 6092 syllabus. QuizQuip is not affiliated with MOE or SEAB and does not host school or past examination papers.
