Question paper
WA1 Practice Paper
40 marks · 55 min · 5 pages
6 multiple-choice questions and structured questions with answer lines. Chapters 1–2 (some schools include the start of Chapter 3).
WA1 is usually the first weighted assessment of the Sec 3 A-Math year, held towards the end of Term 1. Because Sec 3 opens with algebra, WA1 normally leans on quadratic functions, equations and inequalities, with surds close behind.
Set out like a school paper, with a separate mark scheme for checking.

Mark scheme
PROAnswers · Marking points · 3 pages
Model answers with a mark for each creditworthy point — for marking at home or in class.
Commonly Chapter 1 (quadratic functions, equations and inequalities) and Chapter 2 (surds); some schools include the opening of Chapter 3. Check your school’s assessment outline for the exact scope.
The first questions of Section A, as they appear on the paper.
Section A: Structured questions[40 marks]
Answer all questions in the spaces provided. Show all necessary working — omission of essential working will result in loss of marks. Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures unless told otherwise.
The function f is defined by f(x) = 2x² − 12x + 7.
Express f(x) in the form a(x + b)² + c.
State the minimum value of f(x) and the value of x at which it occurs.
Write down the coordinates of the point where the curve y = f(x) crosses the y-axis.
The line y = 2x + k is a tangent to the curve y = x² − 4x + 5, where k is a constant.
Show that the x-coordinates of the intersection points satisfy x² − 6x + (5 − k) = 0, and hence form an equation in k.
Find the coordinates of the point of tangency.
State the number of intersection points between the line y = 2x − 2 and the curve.
Answer this question without a calculator where exact values are required.
Solve the inequality x² − 5x + 4 < 0.
Find the range of values of c for which x² + 2x + c is always positive.
Hence write down the smallest integer value of c.
Do not use a calculator in this question.
Simplify (3√2 + 1)(√2 − 4), giving your answer in the form p + q√2.
Rationalise the denominator of 6/(√5 − 1).
Most schools test Chapter 1 (completing the square, maximum and minimum values, quadratic inequalities, discriminant conditions) and Chapter 2 (operations on surds, rationalising denominators, surd equations). Your school’s Term 1 outline gives the exact scope.
Formats vary by school. This practice paper has 40 marks and takes 55 minutes, matching a typical WA length for A-Math. Your school’s paper may be shorter.
