Recall and simple application
State what each property means.
A cube has a mass of 40 g and a volume of 8 cm³. Calculate its density.
Name a suitable instrument for each measurement.
Water has a density of 1.0 g/cm³. State whether a 2.4 g/cm³ pebble sinks or floats in water, and give a reason.
Give one reason a metal is used for electrical wires, and one reason plastic is used to cover the wires.
Structured, exam-style
A student measures a regular wooden block.
A measuring cylinder contains 35 cm³ of water. A stone is lowered in and the level rises to 49 cm³.
The table shows four materials being considered for the handle of a kettle.
| Material | Thermal conductivity | Flexible? |
|---|---|---|
| P | high | no |
| Q | low | yes |
| R | low | no |
| S | high | yes |
A student classifies six objects into “conducts electricity” and “does not conduct”.
Explain how to find the density of a small key, naming the measurements and the calculation.
Data, evaluation and explanation
A hollow metal boat has a mass of 500 g. The metal itself has a density of 8 g/cm³, but the boat floats. Explain how both statements can be true.
A student says, “This block is 90 g and that block is 40 g, so the 90 g block is denser.” Explain what extra measurement she needs, and why her conclusion does not follow yet.
An object has a mass of 0.24 kg and a volume of 80 cm³.
A school canteen wants to stop giving out single-use plastic cups. The reusable cup must hold hot water without softening, and must not make the drink taste of the cup. Suggest two physical properties to test, and state what result you would want for each.
The water level rises by 18 cm³ when a stone is submerged. The balance reads 54.0 g for the stone. A classmate lowers the stone so quickly that some water splashes out before the second reading.
