Section A: Multiple-choice questions[10 marks]
Choose one answer for each question. Each question is worth 1 mark.
Which quantity is a scalar?
The weight of a 5.0 kg mass (g = 9.8 N/kg) is
Zero resultant force on a moving object means it
On a velocity–time graph, acceleration is found from
A force of 30 N acts on a 6.0 kg mass. The acceleration is
A go-kart speeds up from 4.0 m/s to 14 m/s in 5.0 s. Its acceleration is
Newton’s third law pairs act
A 70 kg person’s weight (g = 9.8 N/kg) is closest to
In the acceleration practical, a against 1/m should be plotted to show

Section B: Structured questions[20 marks]
Answer all questions in the spaces provided.
A sledge of mass 18 kg is pulled across flat snow with a horizontal pulling force of 55 N against 19 N of friction.
Calculate the resultant horizontal force.
Calculate the sledge’s acceleration.
Calculate the sledge’s weight in newtons (g = 9.8 N/kg).
State whether the snow’s upward contact force is larger, smaller or equal to the weight, and why.
This question is about motion graphs. A motorbike’s velocity–time graph: 0 to 28 m/s in 8.0 s (uniform), constant 28 m/s for 15 s, then decelerating to rest in 70 m.
Work out the acceleration during the first 8.0 seconds.
Calculate the distance covered at constant velocity.
Calculate the deceleration during the final stage (use v² − u² = 2as, Higher).
Calculate the total distance of the journey, and the total time taken.
Describe the shape of the graph’s middle section.
This question is about Newton’s laws in action.
A book rests on a table. Explain why the normal contact force and the book’s weight are NOT a Newton’s-third-law pair.
A shopper pushes a trolley with 40 N; friction is 15 N; the trolley and shopping have mass 25 kg. Calculate the acceleration.
