Section A: Multiple-choice questions[10 marks]
Choose one answer for each question. Every correct answer scores one mark.
Simplify 8m + 3n − 5m + n.
Expand 2(4x − 7).
Expand −4(2 − y).
Expand (x + 1)(x + 7).
Factorise x² + 9x + 20.
Factorise x² − 36.
Factorise 3x² − 12x.
Simplify (x² + 7x + 10) ÷ (x + 2). (Higher)
Simplify (5x²)². (Higher)
Expand (x + 2)(x − 2)(x + 3) as far as (x² − 4)(x + 3) and choose the fully expanded form.
Section B: Structured questions[20 marks]
Show all your working. Marks are given for method as well as for the final answer. Give answers in their simplest form.
Expanding skills.
Take away 2(x − 4) from 5(2x − 3), expanding both brackets and simplifying the result.
Expand 3x(2x² − 5x).
Quadratic work.
Expand (2x − 3)(x + 4).
Factorise x² − 2x − 24.
Factorising in shapes.
A rectangle has area (x² + 9x + 18) cm² and one side (x + 3) cm. Write an expression for the other side.
State the value of x that would make the rectangle a square.
Higher factorising. (Higher)
Factorise 4x² + 5x − 6.
Factorise fully 2x³ − 8x.
Cancelling common factors. (Higher)
Simplify (x² − 4x − 21) ÷ (x² − 49).
